Uttaranchal, also known as Uttarakhand, is a picturesque state of northern part of India. It is relatively a new state of India and was carved out of the state of Uttar Pradesh on 8th November 2000.. Uttaranchal consists of 13 districts and has a remarkable natural and scenic beauty. This new state has some of the most beautiful tourist spots with its high mountain peaks, gurgling Rivers, tranquil lakes, verdant valleys, thick forests, and wild life reserve parks etc. The state is also known as Dev Bhoomi or the Abode of God. Uttaranchal has something to offer to all types of tourists, leisure travelers, religious travelers and adventure seekers alike. Dehradun is the provisional capital city. The state has a good tourism infrastructure with well maintained roads, railways and airports.
Uttaranchal mainly forms a part of the Himalayan Ranges and a small area belongs to the Terai region in Foothills of Shivalik range. Uttaranchal has many glaciers, passes, major rivers, meadows, valleys, forests, skiing slopes and trekking routes. The main places of tourist attraction in Uttaranchal are Haridwar, Rishikesh, Valley of Flowers, Kumaon, Pauri, Auli, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Kausani, Chamba Dhanolti, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, Tehri, Uttar Kashi, Champawat, Nainital and Pithoragarh. The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimage site for the Hindus which includes the 4 temples of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. There are many more famous temples like the Chand Devi, Mansa Devi, Dhari Devi, Baijnath, Rudranath etc. The Nanda Devi Parbat is the highest mountain peak in the Chamoli district. The mountaineering peaks include the Bhagirathi, Sahastrataal, Khatling, Gaumukh and Chowkhamba. Skiing and trekking are conducted in Mundali, Dyara Bugyal and Auli. The famous national park in Uttaranchal is the Rajaji Park.
