The food and drinks in Kathmandu are mostly influenced by the Tibetan culture. The traditional delicacy from Tibet, momos is very popular in Kathmandu. The food in Kathmandu is simple and mostly vegetarian. The everyday meal is inclusive of typical dishes. Dishes like ‘Dal Bhat’, preparation from rice and lentils, ‘tarkan’, which is spiced up vegetables and ‘roti’ is included in typical Kathmandu meal.
A Sherpa dish called ‘Gurr’ is consumed in Kathmandu. ‘Gurr’ is made up of raw potatoes. The potatoes are coated with spices and then roasted on hot stone ground, like pancakes. The roasted potatoes are then consumed by mixing them into water, tea or milk.
The drinks in Kathmandu are made up of the materials that are naturally available. Chiya or tea is brewed from milk, spices and sugar. In the mountainous area the tea is made up of yak butter and salt. Raksi is the famous drink made up of rice or wheat spirit. Kathmandu people also consume uniquely prepared alcoholic drinks. ‘Arak’ is an alcohol drink made up of potato, while ‘Chang’ is the beer prepared from fermented millet, rye, maize or barley.
Other than the local food, the tourists can enjoy delicacies from cuisine all over the world. Delicacies from Middle East, Mexico, Korea, Italy and India can be enjoyed in restaurants in Kathmandu.
