Due its critical geographical location, the railway network in Himachal Pradesh is not that impressive. However, the places at foothills and some major cities can be accessed by railways.
There are 2 narrow gauge railway tracks in Himachal Pradesh. The railway track between Kalka and Shimla is 96 kilometers long. The track passes through almost 102 tunnels, while 864 bridges are crossed by the track. The railway track exists for almost a century. It is known as the engineering marvel crafted during the British India. Another track is the longest railway line of Pathankot to Jogindernagar connects Himachal Pradesh with Punjab.
There are five to six trains between Kalka and Shimla. These are Passenger Train, Shiwalik express, Himalayan Queen and variants of these trains. The Shiwalik Deluxe operates during holiday season. The train stops only at Barog. The seating capacity of the train is 120. It is the connecting service of Howrah- Kalka mail. The deluxe express possesses number of features such as wall to wall carpet, cushioned reversible chairs and meal tables. Modern equipments such as music system for entertainment, microphone and alarm to contact the guard are also provided.
Another variant of Shiwalik Express is Shiwalik palace. This Tourist coach comprises of 6 people. It comprises of an onboard kitchen and refrigerator. Dining tables with cushioned chairs, folding beds, carpet, music system, decorative plants and lights and well equipped washroom are also provided in the coach.
