History and Background
Delhi, the capital of India, has harmonious blend of traditional and cosmopolitan cultures. The history of Delhi dates back to the times of the Mahabharata when the Pandavas and Kauravas fought for the city of Indraprastha, which was the old name for Delhi. This capital city of India has experienced the rise and fall of several empires of the Mughals and Mauryans. The first city of Delhi was founded in the 11th century by the Tomar ruler. Qutbuddin Aibak, the first sultan, in 1206 laid the foundation for Qutub Minar which is India’s tallest minaret. The other important cities were built by the other Mughal rulers and Emperor Humayun laid the foundation for the sixth city which was later reconstructed as the Purana Quila. The various historical monuments built during the Mughal period by the emperors Akbar, Shah Jahan and Jehangir have become popular tourist’s attractions. New Delhi has all modern buildings and skyscrapers which blend well among the old structures and monuments found here.
